The making

One piece, start to finish.

01The factory

Sheet copper comes in flat. Everything else happens here.

02Shaping

Cut to weight, then worked over the stake until the body holds its own shape.

03Heat

Copper hardens as it is worked; the furnace softens it again between passes.

04The lathe

Spun true: the belly, the neck, the lip.

05Hammering

Rows of marks, one blow at a time. The hammered finish is the making, left visible.

06Polishing

Dull copper to mirror on the buffing wheel.

07The piece

Lacquered, labelled, ready for the trade.

08Water

Made to hold water for a lifetime.

Craft

Every piece begins as a flat sheet — heated at the brazier, raised over forming stakes, turned, polished, lacquered. The way it has been done for six generations.

Raised, turned and lacquered — none of it is quick.

Raised by hand

Sheet copper and brass worked over stakes until the body holds its own shape.

Named shapes

Satari, Mangal, Navrang, Sangli, Gangotri, Matki — each profile is its own tool set.

Lacquer finish

Plain and hammered lacquer on the peda pots, applied after the body is turned true.

Lota

Jalpatra — the drinking and pouring vessel, in copper and brass, in the shapes the trade asks for by name.

Available in all sizes, seven through ten.

Water Pots

Lacquer peda — the household storage pot, plain or hammered, in copper.

Plain and hammered lacquer, in sizes one, two and three.

Season

Kalash for Gudi Padwa, Diwali and the wedding season — dressed pieces for the altar, plain pieces for the trade.

The festive order goes in early.

Order windows

Diwali stock leaves the workshop from early September; Gudi Padwa from mid-February. Ask for the season sheet. (to confirm)

Pack sizes

Lota by the dozen per size; peda pots individually boxed. Mixed cartons on request. (to confirm)

Dressing

Plain kalash for the trade. Mango-leaf and marigold dressing is the buyer’s; the pieces are made to take it.
